Isles of Sea and Sky Crab Shell Puzzle Walkthrough

The Crab Shell Puzzle on Water Island is one of the trickiest logic challenges in Isles of Sea and Sky. At first glance, it may look like a random shell-matching game, but it’s actually based on a clever Fibonacci-style math sequence. Here’s how to solve it step by step.

How the Crab Puzzle Works

You’ll find the puzzle near a cluster of spiral shells and blue crabs. The key idea: you’re trying to match the total value shown by the blue crabs using the spiral shells around them.

Shell Values

There are two sets of shells you’ll interact with:

  • Reference Shells (Right Side Table)
These show you how much each shell type is worth:

    • Sand Dollar (round with a star): 1
    • Small spiral: 2
    • Larger spirals: 3, 4, 5
  • Puzzle Shells (Spiral on Ground)
These are laid out in a counter-clockwise spiral and follow a Fibonacci pattern:

    • 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8
(starting from the center and moving outwards)

How to Solve

  1. Add up the values of the Blue Crabs.
    For example, if the crabs show: 3 + 4 + 5 = 12
  2. Use the spiral shells to make that sum.
You can only use each shell once, except for the two Sand Dollars (1s) – both can be used.

    Using the example above:
    8 + 3 + 1 = 12 is a valid solution.

  3. Track your selections using the Red Crabs.
Each red crab represents how many shell selections you have. Once you’ve used them all, your selection is submitted automatically.

Final Puzzle (Always the Same)

The third and final puzzle doesn’t change. It always presents:

  • Two shell values marked as 5
  • One unmarked shell

Even though the last shell isn’t labeled, the correct answer is always:

  • 8, 5, 3 (Total = 16)

That implies the unmarked shell is likely worth 6, but that hasn’t been confirmed in-game.

Tips

  • This puzzle tests your ability to recognize Fibonacci patterns and combine values under pressure.
  • Take your time with the first two randomized puzzles to get used to the layout before attempting the final one.
