If you’ve been playing Spirit Summoners for even a short time, you’ve probably noticed one thing pretty quickly — not all characters feel remotely equal.
Some units instantly carry fights, while others end up getting sacrificed just to upgrade stronger ones. That’s simply how the game is designed. Between rarity, factions, and the star-upgrade system, figuring out who’s actually worth investing in can feel confusing early on.
So instead of looking at raw rankings alone, it helps to understand why certain spirits dominate while others fall off fast.
How the Tier System Works
The game divides spirits into four main tiers:
- S Tier — Top-tier, game-defining units
- A Tier — Strong and very usable
- B Tier — Situational or early-game fillers
- C Tier (Food) — Mostly upgrade material
C-tier characters aren’t meant to stay in your team long term. They exist mainly to be used in advancement when you’re upgrading stronger spirits.
Early on, you might still use them simply because your roster is small, but their long-term role is almost always as fodder.
Why Light & Dark Units Dominate
One pattern becomes obvious right away — most S-tier characters belong to the Light and Dark factions.
These factions:
- Have special rarity
- Are significantly harder to summon
- Come with stronger abilities overall
You can usually recognize them by their unique background colors and faction symbols.
Because they’re rare and powerful, they make up the majority of the strongest units in the game.
Best Tank in the Game
One of the most standout defensive units is Bull King (Bull Demon).
His ultimate ability taunts all enemies at once and absorbs incoming damage. As he takes damage, he gains additional scaling effects tied to his HP absorption.
This makes him incredibly durable and one of the most reliable frontliners available.
Top Damage Dealer
Among pure DPS units, Lu Crimson Wing stands out as one of the strongest damage dealers.
He’s widely considered one of the best options for raw offensive output, especially in longer fights where sustained damage matters.
Strongest Controller
Control units are incredibly valuable in Spirit Summoners, and one of the best examples is BM Fiend, the Deity of Black Rock.
His ultimate ability applies a silence effect for seven seconds, which is unusually long. That amount of control can completely shut down enemy teams during key moments.
Most Powerful Healer
One of the strongest healers in the game offers more than just healing.
Her ultimate restores HP to all allies based on her attack stat while also granting shields. If allies already have shields, the ability converts them into explosive damage against enemies.
Because of this combination of healing, shielding, and offensive utility, she’s considered one of the most impactful support units.
The Star Upgrade Problem
Even though S-tier mythic spirits are incredibly strong, there’s a catch.
They’re difficult to upgrade because advancing them requires duplicates. Without enough copies, they can get stuck at lower star levels, which limits their maximum level cap.
This creates an interesting situation where lower-rarity units can sometimes outperform mythics simply because they’re easier to upgrade and reach higher levels faster.
Why Some Lower Rarity Units Matter
A fully upgraded lower-rarity unit at a high level can easily outperform a mythic stuck at a lower star rank.
For example:
- A lower-tier spirit at level 150 can outperform
- A mythic stuck at level 100 due to upgrade limits
This makes mid-tier units more valuable than they first appear, especially during early and mid-game progression.
Rarely Worth Keeping
Legendary and Elite spirits generally serve one main purpose — advancement material.
They may help briefly at the very start, but they quickly become obsolete and are best used to strengthen higher-tier characters.
Notable Epic Spirits
While mythics dominate, a few epic spirits still deserve mention.
Grand Preceptor Yin works as a hybrid controller and tank during early to mid-game, though he struggles in late-game content.
Another useful option is a hybrid healer who also applies poison damage over time, offering both support and offense.
There’s also a burst-damage epic unit that applies burn effects and uses bomb mechanics. The bomb detonates instantly if enemies are already burning, creating interesting synergy during fights.
Early Game Reality
As you build your roster, you’ll quickly learn that rarity isn’t everything.
Star levels, upgrade accessibility, and team synergy often matter just as much as raw power. Sometimes, the unit you can upgrade the fastest ends up being the most valuable in the short term.
That’s why the strongest teams aren’t always made purely of mythics — they’re built around what you can actually develop and maintain.
