Empires & Puzzles Onwyn Hero Guide – Skills, Pull Advice
The Veggie Portal has returned in Empires & Puzzles, and this time it introduces a brand-new five-star hero: Onwyn, the onion-themed ranger. Whenever a new hero enters the portal, players immediately ask the same question — is this hero actually worth pulling for?
Onwyn brings a mix of heavy damage and the well-known fiend mechanics that make the Veggie family so frustrating to fight against. But like most heroes in the game, his value depends on timing, synergy, and how you plan to use him.
Let’s break down his abilities, strengths, and potential drawbacks so you can decide if he’s worth chasing.
Onwyn’s Base Stats and Mana Speed
At base level, Onwyn already has fairly strong stats for a five-star hero.
Attack: 1336
Defense (Shield): 1322
Health: 2305
When fully leveled with attack-focused emblems, those stats can reach around:
Attack: 1922
Defense: 1750
Health: 3999
He uses slow mana speed, which means his special ability takes longer to charge compared to fast or average heroes. Slow mana heroes can sometimes feel frustrating in quick fights, but the tradeoff is that they usually deliver extremely powerful effects when their skill finally activates.
Onwyn definitely follows that pattern.
Special Skill
Onwyn’s special skill deals 375% damage to the main target and five random enemies.
While you only choose one enemy manually, the other hits are distributed randomly across the opposing team. Because of this mechanic, one enemy will always receive at least two hits.
That means a guaranteed 750% damage burst on at least one target.
If an enemy happens to get hit three times, the damage can become devastating and often results in an instant knockout.
After dealing damage, the ability also applies:
- Seedling fiends to every hit enemy
- −49% accuracy for five turns
The accuracy reduction alone can be extremely disruptive in long battles since enemy attacks will frequently miss.
Veggie Fiend Mechanic
The signature feature of Veggie heroes is their fiend evolution system.
Each turn, Onwyn’s passive ability summons a seedling fiend onto a random enemy. These fiends evolve over time:
Seedling Fiend → after 2 turns becomes Sprout Fiend
Sprout Fiend → after 2 turns becomes Blossom Mega Fiend
Each stage becomes progressively stronger.
Seedling Fiend: 20% health
Sprout Fiend: 30% health
Mega Fiend: 60% health
The evolution process can be delayed whenever the enemy receives healing, which adds another layer of strategy when fighting or using Veggie heroes.
Over time, multiple evolving fiends can overwhelm enemy teams.
The One Small Problem with Onwyn’s Fiends
While fiends are powerful, there is one potential downside.
Onwyn’s special ability automatically places a new seedling fiend on each hit enemy.
If an enemy already has a more developed fiend (like a sprout that is about to evolve), the new seedling might replace it.
That means you could unintentionally reset progress toward a Mega Fiend.
Because of this, timing Onwyn’s special skill can matter more than it first appears.
Passive Abilities and Extra Effects
Onwyn also includes several passive bonuses that increase his overall impact in battle.
Counterattack Ether Power
At the start of every battle, Onwyn gains a 60% counterattack effect for six turns.
This means enemies will take damage whenever they attack him during the early stages of combat.
Empowered Resist – Skill Blocking Protection
Like other Veggie heroes, Onwyn is immune to status ailments that prevent special skills.
Whenever he resists such effects, he gains:
- 450 boosted health
- 5% mana
This helps him stay active even against control-heavy enemy teams.
Ranger Class Ability
Onwyn belongs to the Ranger class, which provides a unique advantage once his talent nodes are upgraded.
At higher talent levels, he gains a 25% chance to bypass defensive buffs, including counterattacks.
If the defensive buffs are bypassed, the enemy also receives:
−20% defense for three turns
This allows Onwyn to break through defensive teams that rely heavily on shields and counter mechanics.
Veggie Team Synergy
Onwyn completes the set of five-star Veggie heroes across all elements.
Current Veggie lineup includes:
Purple – Elbeth
Green – Broph
Red – Bartholomew
Blue – Indigon
Yellow – Onwyn
Running multiple Veggie heroes together creates constant fiend pressure, which can slowly overwhelm opponents.
Over time, the battlefield becomes filled with evolving fiends, making it extremely difficult for enemies to recover.
Is Onwyn Worth Pulling?
Overall, Onwyn is a very strong hero with huge damage potential.
His biggest strengths include:
High burst damage
Constant fiend pressure
Strong accuracy debuff
Counterattack passive
Useful ranger bypass ability
The main drawback is his slow mana speed, which means players must wait longer before activating his devastating special skill.
However, once that skill fires, it can easily swing the momentum of a battle.
Pull Advice
During the Veggie Portal event, Onwyn appears alongside other featured heroes.
If you already own some of the featured heroes, it may not be worth spending large amounts of gems chasing duplicates.
Some players prefer to save their gems for larger events like birthday portals, which usually feature a wider selection of strong heroes.
Using event coins for a few pulls is often a safer approach while saving premium currency for bigger opportunities.
Onwyn brings a mix of massive damage output and fiend-based pressure, making him a dangerous hero in longer battles.
While his slow mana speed means patience is required, his abilities can completely dismantle enemy teams once they activate.
For players who enjoy fiend strategies or want to build a full Veggie lineup, Onwyn is definitely a valuable addition.
But if your roster already feels strong, waiting for upcoming portals with broader hero selections might also be a smart move.
