HoMM Olden Era Spell Tier List (May 2026)
Spells in Olden Era are not balanced around raw damage. If you rank them that way, you’ll get the wrong conclusions.
The strongest spells are the ones that:
- decide tempo
- deny enemy actions
- enable your units to win fights without losses
That is why control and utility spells dominate this tier list over pure damage.
HoMM Olden Era Spell Tier List (May 2026)
S Tier Spells
Twilight (Nightshade – Tier 3)
This is one of the most oppressive spells in the game.
Shutting down ranged attacks completely can instantly neutralize entire enemy armies. At higher levels, it also reduces melee damage and can hit all enemies.
If your opponent relies on ranged units, the fight is basically over.
Blink (Arcane – Tier 2)
Pure control.
This spell lets you reposition units instantly, which breaks normal battlefield rules. You can:
- jump into backlines
- avoid damage
- secure key kills
This alone can win fights without needing stronger units.
Doreath’s Tide (Arcane – Tier 5)
Global tempo swing.
Buffs your entire army and debuffs the enemy at the same time. Speed and initiative are the most important stats in combat, and this spell manipulates both sides.
This is one of the strongest late-game spells.
Shadow Army (Nightshade – Tier 5)
Massive power spike.
It temporarily increases your unit count, which directly translates into damage and survivability. In large fights, this can completely flip outcomes.
Radiant Armour (Daylight – Tier 4)
Simple but broken.
Reducing incoming damage across your army is incredibly strong. At higher levels, it affects all units, making your army significantly harder to kill.
A Tier Spells
Haste (Daylight – Tier 1)
One of the best early-game spells.
Speed determines everything in early fights. Even a small boost can let your units act first, reach targets faster, and avoid damage.
Enlarge Shadow (Nightshade – Tier 1)
Efficient stat buff.
Attack and defense boosts scale well early and remain useful later, especially when upgraded to affect all units.
Vulnerability (Nightshade – Tier 4)
Huge damage amplifier.
Increasing damage taken by enemies makes every unit in your army more effective. Works especially well with burst damage compositions.
Rewind Life (Arcane – Tier 4)
One of the best sustain tools.
Reviving units mid-fight is extremely valuable, especially in longer battles. This helps reduce losses and maintain momentum.
Silence (Nightshade – Tier 3)
Shuts down abilities and focus.
This is especially strong against ability-reliant units. At higher levels, it affects multiple targets or even the entire enemy army.
Favorable Wind (Daylight – Tier 2)
Best buff for ranged comps.
If you are playing Grove or Dungeon ranged setups, this massively boosts your damage output.
B Tier Spells
Healing Water (Daylight – Tier 1)
Good early sustain.
Helpful in early fights, but doesn’t scale as well since it doesn’t revive units.
Weakening Ray (Daylight – Tier 2)
Situational but useful.
Removing counterattacks is strong in specific matchups, especially for melee-heavy armies.
Berserk (Nightshade – Tier 4)
High-risk, high-reward.
Can cause chaos in enemy lines, but not always reliable depending on positioning.
Temporal Spheres (Arcane – Tier 2)
Trap-based control.
Strong in choke points or defensive setups, but harder to use effectively in fast fights.
Impending Fate (Arcane – Tier 3)
Solid AoE damage.
Reliable, but doesn’t offer the same control or tempo impact as top-tier spells.
Heavenly Blades (Daylight – Tier 4)
Damage plus healing.
Useful in sustained fights, but weaker than Radiant Armour in most cases.
C Tier Spells
From a Bird’s Eye (Daylight – Tier 1)
Pure utility.
Helpful for map information, but no combat value.
Read Minds (Nightshade – Tier 2)
Scouting tool.
Useful for planning, but doesn’t affect combat directly.
Clear Fog (Daylight – Tier 4)
Exploration-focused.
Nice to have, but not impactful in fights.
Naira’s Veil (Nightshade – Tier 3)
Niche stealth effect.
Rarely game-changing unless used in very specific strategies.
Summon Starchild (Nightshade – Tier 4)
Decent distraction unit.
Can help soak damage, but doesn’t compare to stronger control spells.
