Merge Tactics Beginner Guide – How to Merge, Combo
Have you ever wished Clash Mini had a second chance? Well, Supercell might not have revived it directly, but its spirit is very much alive—and it’s landed right inside Clash Royale with a brand-new twist: Merge Tactics. It’s fresh, fast, and surprisingly strategic.
Let’s break it all down, step-by-step, so you can dive in like a pro—even if you’re just starting out.
Merge Tactics Beginner Guide – How to Merge, Combo
What is Merge Tactics?
Merge Tactics is a 4-player tactical game mode inside Clash Royale. Instead of real-time action, it’s turn-based—each match plays out over several rounds. And it’s all about building a better team than your opponents through smart merging, positioning, and trait stacking.
You don’t have towers. You don’t control units in real time. Instead:
- You deploy and merge troops in a planning phase.
- Then you watch them auto-battle in the action phase.
- Win rounds, survive longer than the others, and you’ll climb the trophy road.
Rulers: Your Hero & Passive Perk
Instead of towers, you pick a Ruler—a hero that doesn’t fight, but holds your HP and gives you passive power.
Right now, there are two rulers:
- Royal King – Grants +4 Elixir every time you lose a round. Great for comeback plays.
- Spirit Empress – Gives +1 Elixir every time you merge troops. Perfect for merge-heavy strategies.
Pro tip: Choose your Ruler based on your playstyle. If you’re still figuring things out, Royal King is forgiving and great for beginners.
Traits: The Hidden Synergy System
Every troop comes with 2 traits. When you stack troops with matching traits, you unlock powerful team bonuses:
- Rangers – Attack faster.
- Undead – Curse enemies.
- Juggernauts – Shield allies.
Check the left panel during matches to track your trait bonuses. Think of this like building a deck in Clash Royale—but here, it’s dynamic and depends on what troops you pull and merge.
Troops & Merging Basics
How Troops Work:
- You get 3 troops to choose from at the start of each round.
- You have 4 Elixir per round (by default).
- Troops cost between 2 to 5 Elixir.
- Units include Clash Royale classics: Goblins, Archers, Pekka, Mega Knight, Archer Queen, and more.
- They keep their in-game abilities. So yes, Mega Knight still stuns, and Princess still splashes.
Merging:
- 2 identical troops = 1 merged troop (with a star level up).
- Merged units are stronger, faster, and tankier.
- You can merge up to 4-star troops, but it takes planning and a bit of luck.
- Merging also triggers trait synergies—which stack across your team.
Bench: Your Backup Strategy
There’s a bench (like in auto-battlers) where you can place units you’re not using. This is great for:
- Saving cards to merge next round.
- Prepping combos.
- Holding strategic troops for future modifiers.
It might seem like a side feature, but trust me—managing your bench well is key to long-term wins.
Modifiers: The Game Changers
As you win and collect trophies, you unlock Modifiers—these twist the rules and add new layers of strategy.
Here are some popular ones:
- First Free – Your first troop each round costs 0 Elixir.
- Echo Bench – Clones one troop from your bench each round.
- Trait Dummy – Free troop with two random traits.
- Pandora’s Bench – Randomly transforms one benched troop every round.
Modifiers can completely change your game plan, so always check which ones are active before you start.
Combat Strategy Tips
- Frontline & Backline: Use tanky melee troops like Prince or Pekka up front. Keep Archers or Princess in the back.
- Match Traits: Prioritize units that share traits for synergy bonuses.
- Merge Wisely: Don’t just spam units. Focus on merging to 2-star or higher units early—it’s often better than having more 1-star troops.
- Adapt Your Team: Watch what others are playing and adjust. For example, if someone’s going heavy on Undead, stack traits that counter it.
- Use Your Losses: Losing a round with the Royal King? That 4 Elixir boost next turn could swing the game in your favor.
Victory Conditions & Rewards
- You get crowns and trophies for every round you win.
- Placing top 2 gives you big rewards, including gold, daily drops, and progress on the Merge Tactics Trophy Road.
- Trophy Road unlocks new modifiers and more rewards as you climb.
If you love strategy, synergy, and a more relaxed pace of Clash Royale, Merge Tactics is a mode you shouldn’t skip.
